past and future signs

Your Past Is The Worst Place To Go For Advice

September 22, 20242 min read

Your past might feel like the safest place to seek advice—it’s familiar, comfortable, and filled with experiences you’ve already lived through.

But here’s the thing: your past is where your limiting beliefs, self-doubt, and fears also reside.

It’s where you learned to play small, avoid risks, and repeat patterns that no longer serve you.

So when you turn to your past for guidance, you’re really just asking the part of yourself that’s stuck to keep you stuck.

Think about it. The past holds memories of every mistake you’ve made, every negative story you’ve told yourself, and thanks to negativity bias, your brain clings to those moments more than the positive ones.

Whether the criticism comes from outside or from your own mind, it’s the negative feedback that tends to stick.

When life gets hard, your subconscious brain pulls you back to those old, familiar narratives: “See, I knew this would happen. I always mess up.” This story quietly morphs into, “I always mess up, so why even try?” And just like that, you’re trapped, convinced you can’t grow beyond your past.

There’s more to it, too. Your subconscious codes "familiar" as safe, even if what's familiar is painful. That’s why it takes so much effort to break free from an old, destructive pattern—because your brain is telling you that staying put, even in discomfort, is somehow safer than change.

Here’s the truth: your past doesn’t hold the secret to your future. It was shaped by outdated coping mechanisms and fears that don’t apply to who you are now or where you’re headed.

Instead of looking back, focus on where you want to go. The version of you that’s thriving, balanced, and fulfilled isn’t buried in past mistakes or regrets. She’s ahead, waiting for you to catch up.

Next time you find yourself seeking advice from your past, pause. Ask yourself, “Is this really helping me move forward?”
